Named for Pierre Magnol, 17th century French botanist
Magnolias produce NO nectar, having evolved before bees and butterflies first appeared. Magnolias do produce large amounts of pollen used as food by beetles that act as the flowers' pollinators.
Seeds develop within a cone-like structure, actually a woody aggregate fruit. As the fruit matures, chambers split open revealing seeds attached by threads and surrounded by glossy red, fleshy arils, high in fat and sought after by birds.
