Thermonasty
The crocus is thermonastic, meaning that it responds to an outside stimulus, in this case temperature, by nondirectional movement, that is opening and closing. In the cool of the morning the crocus petals remain closed in the vertical position, but as the temperature rises throughout the day the petals open ever more widely until mid-afternoon when the petals are completely open horizontally. With the approach of the coolness of evening the petals return to the vertical position.
